The biggest thing is that PNG has many more advantages than GIF. For example, PNG supports up to sixteen million colors. Therefore, it is quite suitable for complex and high-quality images as well as photographs. It is not the best format for images with thousands of colors, as GIF usually only supports 256 colors. On the other hand, PNG has the property of lossless compression; therefore, it does not harm the image after compression. As for GIF, the limited palette may sometimes cause the images to look a little distorted, but they will not suffer any loss. While PNG has a greater advantage because it provides full alpha transparency by assigning a value to each pixel of the image, which determines the degree of transparency, GIF has only one color, which makes it completely transparent.
PNG and GIF have certain things that differentiate them: color depth, lossless compression methods, and types of transparency. PNG is used to represent images with millions of colors, as it provides excellent detail and high-quality images such as photographs and pictures with relatively few colors. GIF, on the other hand, is limited to a few colors: a maximum of 256, which certainly makes it suitable for certain images and drawings that require fewer colors. PNG uses lossless compression, which preserves the picture quality. From this point, GIFs also apply the same principle of compression, but the provision of a range of colors again affects the quality of the images. PNG has advanced transparency (alpha transparency), while all GIFs provide only simple 1-bit binary transparency (one color becomes transparent)
Both GIF and PNG have the ability to set transparency; however, their methods differ. For example, GIF allows you to specify that a color in an image will be made fully transparent, which may be suitable for simple images such as logos or icons. Still, this may often not be the best way to indicate transparency for images that would otherwise produce soft edges or varying opacity. PNG provides an advanced transparency mechanism using its alpha channel, which defines the level of transparency, and thus provides a smooth transition between opaque and fully transparent states. Thus, well-designed images will require many more such smooth transitions between opaque and fully transparent, making it more suitable for complex graphics, web design, and images that blend into different backgrounds.
"PNG GIF" can never become a GIF. The phrase "PNG GIF" is contradictory, because no true PNG exists just like GIF in completely different formats or file formats. The GIF format is primarily for animating images, while the PNG format is reserved solely for static images, especially those with high quality and transparency. This format can be used to create animations, although GIFs may perform poorly in doing so due to the limited ability and color palette to do so, and PNG has less advanced transparency capabilities. It is possible, but converting GIF to PNG will not make these static images.
